7-Zip
7-Zip is freeware file compression software that also allows you to Split files. It is useful for Splitting files you want to upload to cloud storage apps that limit file size. You can download it on the 7-Zip download page.
WinRAR
WinRAR (free) provides full RAR and ZIP file support and can decompress CAB, GZIP, ACE and other archive formats. Click here to visit the WinRAR download page.
DVD Shrink
DVD Shrink is free software that allows you to "Backup" your movies to your Computer or copy your DVDs to Blank Disks. I recommend using DVD +R disks to backup your media. The DVD Shrink homepage does not allow you to download the file. The latest version is 3.2.0.15, and you can get it by clicking here and then clicking the button that says "Download Now".
AVS Video Converter
AVS Video Converter is not freeware but is the only high quality video converter that I know of that takes DVD Shrink files and converts them to MP4 or whichever type of file you need. I use it to convert DVD backups to MP4s to view on my Android device. It's well worth the buy. The latest version is available on the AVS Video Converter homepage. An "Unlimited" purchase gives you access to all AVS programs for the life of your computer.
Audacity
Audacity is a free, open source, cross-platform program that lets you record or edit music or sound files. It is useful for recording streaming audio and sampling tracks. You can download it on the Audacity homepage.
GIMP
If you're looking for a free photo editor that's comparible to Photoshop, look no further! GIMP is an open source, user contributed image manipulation program that's used to edit pictures. The latest version can be downloaded on the GIMP homepage
Chrome Remote Desktop
Chrome Remote Desktop is a free app that allows you to remotely control any computer that has a Chrome Browser. Once installed, your machine can be accessed through the Chrome extension on another computer or through the Chrome Remote Desktop Android app. Setup is painless, and it's easy to use.
